Information technology depends on whether you lot are planning to exercise a fard (obligatory) fast or a nafl (voluntary) fast. For fard fasts, the intention should exist made before fajr. For nafil fasts, the intention tin can be fabricated duirng the day, subsequently fajr, equally long as you lot take non eaten or had intimate relations

What is the intention?

Ideally, the intention should be made in the heart before each twenty-four hour period (i.e. earlier fajr), to wake up forsuhoor (the pre-dawn meal) and, the refrain from eating and drinking food and drinkable.

Fard fast – brand intention before fajr

Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), the mother of the believers narrated that Allah'due south Messenger (peace be on him) said:

Whoever does non commit himself to fasting before dawn (fajr), there is no fast for him."(Abu Dawood)

"In that location is no fast for the 1 who did not make the intention to fast from the nighttime." (Daraqutni)

If you went to sleep without the intention of fasting, and you wake upwards after fajr and want to fast, the fast is not correct considering you have already passed a portion of the day without the intention to fast. You cannot employ the intention to do a fard fast in retrospect.

Voluntary fast – you can make the intention after fajr

Scholars accept said that for optional (nafl) fasts, i may make the niyyah for information technology after fajr, during the daytime, as long every bit you did not consume or drink or have intimate relations after fajr, as per the hadith of Aisha (may Allah exist pleased with her):

"Allah's Messenger entered upon me one 24-hour interval and said, 'Practice you accept something [for me to consume]?'We said, 'No.' He then said, 'In that case, I am fasting [today].'(Muslim)

Breaking a voluntary fast is permissible

In the rest of this hadith, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated:

So he came to us another twenty-four hours and we said:  'We have been given a gift of hays (a mixture of dates and ghee).' He said,'Testify it to me for I had begun the solar day fasting.' And then he ate." [(Muslim)

It was narrated that Abu Juhayfah said:

"… Abu'l-Darda' came and he fabricated some food for him – i.e. for Salman. He said: 'Eat, for I am fasting.' Salman said: 'I volition non eat until y'all eat.' So he ate… and Salman said to him: 'Your Lord has rights over yous, your soul has rights over you, and your family unit has rights over you, so requite each of them their rights.' And so he came to the Prophet (peace exist upon him) and told him about that, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Salman is correct.'" (Bukhari)

Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"I made some food for the Prophet (peace a be upon him), and when it was served a man said: 'I am fasting.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Your blood brother has invited you (to consume) and has gone to some effort for your sake, so break your fast and fast some other day in its stead if yous wish.'" (Daraqutni)

These hadith prove that it is permissible to suspension an optional (ornafl) fast. The fast should be completed on a later solar day.

Nevertheless, information technology is not permissible to intermission an obligatory fast without a valid reason. To suspension a fard fast is a major sin.
